The Government of the Lao PDR has officially established the Lao National Geoparks Commission, strengthening coordination and governance of geopark initiatives at the national level. Created by Prime Ministerial decree, the Commission reflects Laos’ determination to become a long-term member of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, while remaining aligned with the country’s National Socio-Economic Development Strategy.
Chaired by the Minister of Agriculture and Environment, the Commission brings together key cross-sectoral ministries as well as provinces engaged in geopark development initiatives.
Its mandate is to oversee, guide, and support the development of geoparks, with the assistance of a Technical Committee and a National Scientific Committee involving universities and experts.
A National Secretariat ensures operational coordination and project monitoring.
This Commission represents a major strategic tool for enhancing Laos’ geological heritage and promoting sustainable territorial development.
