Learning from International Experience to Support the Hinboun Geopark

From 28 to 30 November 2025, seven national and territorial Lao officials participated in a three-day study visit to the UNESCO Global Geopark of Khorat in Thailand.

This exchange was organised within the framework of the KARST project “Khammouane Ardèche Stratégie Territoriale”, alongside partners from SMERGC (Chauvet Cave – France), the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Natural Park (French Geopark), and Tétraktys.

The visit provided concrete insights into Geopark governance, team organisation, scientific interpretation, educational activities, community involvement, and the preparation required for UNESCO designation.

Discussions with Thai Geopark teams strengthened understanding of good practices and key challenges, while offering references directly transferable to the Lao context. This study visit represented a strong capacity-building moment in support of the structuring of the future Hinboun Geopark. It also paved the way towards a future cooperation between Hinboun Geopark and Khorat Geopark, with promising perpsectives in 2026.
